Oh, baby I get by (Ah, with a little help from my friends)

All I need is my buddies (Ah, with a little help from my friends)

-  Joe Cocker

In 2006, Conrad Sverkerson, a long-time stage manager at First Avenue, injured his back in a bike accident and insurance didn’t cover his medical bills. It became immediately apparent that no resources existed to aid those who work behind-the-scenes in music and live entertainment. Friends and First Avenue co-workers James Baker and Myles Kennedy jumped in to help, creating the Twin Cities Music Community Trust with the mission of “defraying medical and living expenses of those in the local music community in times of need.” James and Myles threw a benefit show featuring local stars of Conrad’s choosing, with all proceeds going to the newly established Trust.

For Baker and Kennedy, the Trust was personal. They knew that for the contract worker or the self-employed, a health problem can be financially devastating.  Many benefit concerts were held, helping those both well-known and completely behind the scenes, all of whom make the Twin Cities music community thrive. Sound engineers Brad Kern, Chad Weis, and Matt Lindquist, and musician Eyedea were just a few of the early beneficiaries. In 2014, James and Myles filed for and received official 501c3 non-profit status.

Due to other obligations, the original organizers turned over operations to First Avenue Productions in 2019. The mission of the Trust was broadened to include not only assistance to those in need but also education, workforce training, and opportunity for Minnesotans to participate in the creation, performance, or appreciation of the arts.

In March 2020, COVID-19 led to widespread, prolonged cancellations of gatherings over 10 people, having a disproportionate impact on the music and event industry workforce – people whose job it is to use music to gather community. The Twin Cities Music Community Trust’s Emergency Relief Fund was immediately established. This fund aims to provide relief to our friends and neighbors who rely on gigs to pay their bills, providing a home away from home for all those who love music.
